The Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Porto Alegre is a hospital complex currently composed of 8 hospitals – each one dedicated to a different medical specialty: Hospital Santa Clara [HSC], Hospital São Francisco [HSF], Hospital São José [HSJ], Hospital da Criança Santo Antônio [HCSA], Pavilhão Pereira Filho [PPF]], Hospital Santa Rita [HSR], Hospital Dom Vicente Scherer [HDVS] andHospital Nora Teixeira [HNT]. In addition to a Cultural Historic Center [CHC] and a Garage Building.
Daily, Santa Casa receives a large flow of patients, who are attended to in their numerous demands.
For more than a year, ZON Design immersed itself in an extensive study to propose a complete Signaling System – a Wayfinding System – for Santa Casa; a system that covered all the signaling demands of the hospital complex. Different colors and icons were defined to identify each hospital unit; typologies [elements and plates] that could be used in all hospitals were studied, although each one works in a different medical area; the appropriate typography for the information was chosen.
Although the Signaling System is already in use, Hospital São José was the first hospital to be completely re-signaled with the new signage standard. The medical specialty of this hospital unit is Neurology.
Gradually, the other hospitals and institutional areas are receiving the new standard. The signs performed within the new system have shown the importance of a well-designed Signaling System for people to navigate easily and safely in complex environments.
